President's Message

Dear Turkish American Community and Friends of Türkiye:

This Newsletter covers both October and November.

I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving (Şükran Günü) and Kurban Bayramı (Day of Sacrifice), as well as  Turkish Republic Day.

On the 29th I called my parents to thank them for educating me about Atatürk and the Republic.  When I was a child, my father always reminded me and my siblings, "Children, don't get too used to America; we will be returning to our homeland in a few years."  Well, in the summer of 1974 when I was 11, we indeed made a firm return to Türkiye.  But my father was not able to find a job and we returned to America.  My parents bought a new home and we began our new life in America.  One evening my father gathered the family, and said, "My dear family, I tried to return to Turkey, but I failed.  I am sorry.  Now, America is your new home.  Love it, exalt it, and be a somebody in it, for this will benefit Türkiye."  He paused as tears filled his eyes.  As his lips quivered he concluded, "But, please do not forget Türkiye . . . and always remember Atatürk."  Out of respect, we all left the room, so that my father and mother could have a moment alone with their feelings.

Far from beautiful Türkiye, we Turkish Americans are family to each other.  We are relatively new to America.  But we are wise souls, hard workers, fast learners, and leaders.  We are all ambassadors of our rich Turkish heritage, and empowered by American democracy and opportunity to share our heritage.  In the recent elections, five Turkish Americans ran for public office, and two were elected.  As Türkiye grows in importance, so shall Turkish Americans, and America will be better for it.  That Turkey has become a key multidimensional partner of the United States in the evolving multi-polar world, and that the United States considers Turkish Americans as a key heritage community is owed to the good Turk and the good American you have all been.   ATAA celebrates you and your families!

I would like to commend the ATAA Turkish American Broad Advocacy Network (TABAN) for unprecedented Turkish American Heritage Day and Republic Day celebrations nationwide, as ATAA local chapters from the Carolinas to Connecticut, from Washington state to Washington DC, and from Michigan to Maryland obtained 20 state and city proclamations, hosted local, state and federal legislators, as well as foreign consuls general from European and South American nations.  ATADC, supported by ATAA and the Turkish Coalition of America (TCA), recruited Washington DC Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton to the Congressional Turkish Caucus.

ATAA President Gunay Evinch, Ambassador Namık Tan, and Chief of Staff Arthur Estopinan at the Republic Day Ball.

October and November have been active months for ATAA also in the international arena.

As ATAA President I had the honor to serve as Master of Ceremonies and introduce dignitaries at the inauguration of the first THY Washington DC - Istanbul flight at Washington's Dulles International Airport.  The first flight carried over 200 passengers, including Congressional members, staff and families, business representatives, as well as 25 Native American leaders for an educational visit to Turkey.

I joined the flight on route to Ankara for the TOBB - Franklin Center 26th Transatlantic Conference and the Hacettepe University Native American Conference, and then to Northern Cyprus for the First Annual Cyprus Turkish Congress.

As ATAA President I also had the honor to represent the Turkish American community at the Turkish Asian Center for Strategic Studies (TASAM) "World Turkic Forum" in Istanbul, which was attended by more than 200 Turkish and Turkic civil society leaders from Europe, the Caucuses, and Central Asia.

With the passing of the fall, the Turkish American community continued to see the passing of some its community leaders, including the former President of ATADC, Dr. Ünal Bener,  founder of Maryland Turkish American Association(MATA) Dr. Mustafa Önal and former ATADC  Board Member John Özlü. Allah rahmet eylesin (May God keep them in peace).

Wishing you and your families good health, happiness, and prosperity.

Warm regards,

Gunay Evinch

President
Assembly of Turkish American Associations

ATAA President Evinch and VP Çınar Speak at
Northern Cyprus and Istanbul World Turkic Congresses

The TASAM World Turkic Forum and Northern Cyprus Turkish Coordination Council invited ATAA to provide presentations and participate in working committees to increase Turkic solidarity, lobbying efficacy, and public relations.  President Gunay Evinch stated that in a meeting with Turkish Prime Ministry in Washington DC last December, the Turkish American community was highlighted as a model immigrant Turkish community for the Turkish diaspora in Europe, and that ATAA, due to its principles of solidarity within diversity and inter-Turk dialogue, and grassroots efficacy, was highlighted as a model civil society organization for other Turkish groups.

TASAM World Turkic Forum

Ambassador Murat Bilhan, ATAA President Günay Evinch, Mardin Governor Hasan Duruer.

In Istanbul, ATAA President Evinch represented the Turkish American community at the Turkish Asian Center for Strategic Studies (TASAM) "World Turkic Forum" in Istanbul, which was attended by more than 200 Turkish and Turkic civil society leaders from Europe, Caucuses, and Central Asia.  A large Kazakh contingency lead the Asian and Caucasus group, followed by Azeri refugees from Armenian-occupied western Azerbaijan, Tatars from Ukraine and Kazan, Turkish Cypriots, Uzbeks, Turcomans from northern Iraq, and Uyghur refugees living in Turkey.  An equally large European contingency was led by Turkish leaders from Germany, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, France, Macedonia, Bosnia, Romania and Bulgaria.  The Congress organizers renewed their invitation to Turkmenistan and Kyrgyz civil society leaders.

President Evinch spoke on the developing Turkish American public advocacy system, including lobbying, campaign financing and prosecution of rights in the judicial system.  In a second panel, President Evinch discussed past and current litigation to protect freedom of speech to disagree with the Armenian allegation of genocide, including holding individuals and groups accountable for defamation of scholars and public leaders who disagree with the Armenian point of view.

The Congress, which was originally planned to take place in Mardin, southeast Turkey, was moved to Istanbul only weeks before the date of the Congress.  President Evinch expressed to the Mardin Governor Hasan Duruer who helped fund and attended the Congress, that he hopes that the next Turkic Forum will take place in Mardin, as the city was a "success for diversity in the Turkish Republic."

North Cyprus Turkish Congress

President Evinch and Vice President Ali Çinar represented the Turkish American community at the Turkish Cyprus Coordination Council's "First Annual Cyprus Turkish Congress" at the Acapulco Spa Resort in Girne, North Cyprus.

President Evinch explained the Turkish American public advocacy system, but expressed concern that without a clear policy and position on the Cyprus matter, lobbying will not be effective.  "We Turkish Americans are proud of the Turkish Cypriots, who survived massacres 1963-1974, established a system of self-governance which is more successful than many recognized countries, and have finally awoken to the realities that left them empty-handed despite voting in favor of the Annan Plan.

ATAA visits North Cyprus once a year, and we are impressed by your tourism and education industries, and moved by your dignity and self-determination.  Our electronic travel report is provided to each member of Congress and Senate, as well as the White House."

ATAA Northeast VP explained the structure of Turkic Diaspora in the USA with the examples of the activities nationwide. He indicated that strong global network is the key to be successful at the grassroots level in the Turkic World.

Congress President and former Northern Cyprus Foreign Minister Vedat Çelik stated that the goal of the Congress was to gather Turkish groups around the world for the promulgation of a unified voice and policy for a lasting solution on the island, to implementation of such policy, and to strengthen ties with Turkey.  Çelik stated that the Turks may not be as effective as their Greek lobbying counterparts, but that their cause founded in fundamental human rights and human dignity, particularly surviving ethnic cleansing and genocide between 1963 and 1974, surviving an economic and social embargo since 1974, and being let down by the Annan process in which the Greek Cypriots voted against and Turkish Cypriots voted for the UN-backed unification of the island.

ATAA President Günay Evinch, Honorable Rauf DenktaŞ, ATAA VP Ali Çınar.

One of the founding leaders of the Turkish Cypriot resistance and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Honorable Rauf Denktas stated that the Turkish Cypriots were in great danger due to the lack of motivation of the Greek Cypriots to find a solution, and their fanciful view of the island as a genetically Greek island at the exclusion of people of Turkish heritage.  Denktas stated, "In 2012, the Greek Cypriots will chair the EU and create many obstacles for Turkey.  They are merely buying time until then by frustrating a solution and successfully blaming Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots for it."

Denktas recited the positions of Greek Cypriot leaders that while a UN-backed Cypriot federation was a way to remove the UN and Turkish peace forces, it would not be implementable thereafter.  Denktas stated that Greek Cypriot leaders have sent many important messages about their intentions and plans for the Turkish Cypriots:  "we are in the path of Makarios", "we are inspired by EOKA" (Greek Cypriot supremacist group that committed ethnic cleansing against Turkish Cypriots, 1963-1974), and, "it is now the duty of EOKA to oust the Turkish forces."

Denktas recited the common position of Turkish leaders from Ataturk through current Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu regarding the strategic importance of the island, only 40 miles off the southern coast of Turkey, to Turkish national interests.

Denktas expressed that Turkish civil society leaders who are present at the Congress must take the message to their constituents, and prepare well and lead the way.  "Already EU outfits are strategically identifying, forming, and funding NGO's in Turkey to support a plan that will not be in the interest of Turkey and Turkish Cypriots," he expressed.
