President's
Message by Ergün Kırlıkovalı

Dear
Turkish Americans and Friends of
Türkiye:
November
was dramatic and hectic for the Turkish American
community. Let's start with news from Türkiye:
Another
quake: We were rocked, once again, by an
earthquake near Van, Türkiye, an aftershock, on
November 9, 2011. You can watch the panic and
tragedy at the moment earthquake hit here. It was registered 5.6 by
the Earthquake Studies Center of Boğazici
University at its Kandilli Observatory in
Istanbul, but it "felt like 6.6" due to expansion
of the soil underneath. Dozens of large buildings,
cracked by the first earthquake, totally collapsed
killing more than 30 people. Add to this, the deep
freezing winter weather in the area and you get
the picture of the suffering endured by the
survivors in tents. If you find it in your heart
in this holiday season to warm these unfortunate
earthquake victims who lost loved ones, sometimes,
entire families, please make a generous donation
to the "Van, Türkiye, Earthquake Relief
Fund" established by the Turkish Philanthropy
Fund. 100% of the funds will go towards relief of
the earthquake victims.
PKK
terror continued to claim innocent lives in
Türkiye and some in the big media continued to
refer to the terrorists as "guerillas" or even a
more romantic "freedom fighters". The most widely
accepted definition of terrorism is "violence or
the threat of violence, especially bombing,
kidnapping, and assassination, carried out for
political purposes". The US, the EU, and the UN
regard the PKK as a terrorist organization. So,
why this hypocrisy on the part of the big media by
insisting on calling the terrorists a hygienic
"guerilla" or a romantic "freedom fighter?" That
must be one of the reasons why the populace is
increasingly fed up with the bias of the big media
and why the big newspapers are biting the dust one
after the other. The internet and the social media
made people realize that they are not really
dependent on the prejudice persistently pumped by
the pompous big media. If this trend continues,
there may be no "paper" newspapers left in a
decade... Continue |

The
Turkish Rescue Nobody Remembered
Benny
Ziffer, Haaretz.com - A new French book
attempts to grapple with a Turkish operation to save 476
Jews from France during the Holocaust. Many of those
rescued spurned their saviors thereafter and the episode
has virtually been lost to history.
While I
waited for French author Ariane Bois in the lobby of the
Dan Accadia Hotel in Herzliya, I could not fail to
notice the excitement in the air. Jews of North African
extraction had come to the hotel to celebrate the
marriage of their children. They were holding seven days
of banqueting - ostentatious events heralded on a
gold-plated board at the entrance to the lobby that
seemed like something out of "Cinderella." Continue |

Turkish-American Association of Greater
Kansas City
In 1978, a handful of individuals
set out to establish a social and cultural organization
to bring together Turks and friends of Turkey living in
the greater Kansas City area, to be a voice for their
interests and concerns, and ultimately, to present and
promote Turkish culture before Kansas Citians at large.
Their efforts materialized and TAA-KC was founded in
August of 1979. TAA-KC was subsequently incorporated as
a not-for-profit organization by the State of Missouri
in 1980, and continues its activities in this status to
this day along the lines the founders envisaged. TAA-KC
is affiliated with the Assembly of Turkish American
Associations (ATAA) and has representation at the
Ethnic Enrichment Commission of Kansas City, Missouri
(EEC-KC).

Loveswept
A long time Turkish community
leader, former ATA-DC president and current ATAA Trustee
Dr. Engin Inel Holmstrom published her first novel
"Loveswept" which is
a cross-cultural romance taking place during the social
and political turmoil of 1950s Turkey where the line
between state and mosque becomes blurred and American
dollars flood the country. Postwar Ankara is a place of
daily intrigue where corruption and romance could bring
happiness and disaster. The
book is published by Dionysus Books and can be
obtained through Amazon.
Kırk Diken - Forty
Thorns
Longtime ATAA member and supporter
Judy Ayyildiz just published her new novel which is
about Turkey from the Balkan Wars to 1980s. It has been
released to a favorable reception in Istanbul in a
Turkish translation. The English version, FORTY THORNS,
will be launched by Remzi
Bookstore in December. KIRK DIKEN is now well into
its 2nd printing and this week was placed on the www.tulumba.com
book site which is the largest distributor of Turkish
books online in the U. S. Another book by Judy Ayyildiz
"Some of my Ancestors are Ottomans and Turks", a
children's book which sold out in its 3rd printing, was
one of their best sellers for quite a
while. |
