PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Members of the ATAA and Friends of Türkiye:

I hope this E-Newsletter finds you well. On behalf of ATAA, I would like to thank you for your positive response to our first E-newsletter in December.  We received many commendations and over 150 membership renewals and new members since the New Year.  We hope you equally enjoy this month's E-Newsletter and urge your friends and your local Turkish American organizations to join the ATAA.

We ended 2009 with two key successes.  As a part of ATAA's policy of enhanced cooperation with the New York-based Federation of Turkish American Associations (FTAA), President Kaya Boztepe and I submitted a joint letter to Congress and the Senate stating that the Turkish-Armenian protocols render Armenian resolutions unproductive.  While many members of Congress commended ATAA, our letter drew the ire of some politicians dependent on Armenian nationalism for their political existence, and revealed Armenian nationalist fears that the Protocols and international law will not permit Armenia to expand eastward and occupy Azerbaijan, or westward and invade eastern Turkey, or run away from the historical truth of the Armenian Revolt of 1880-1919, during which over one million Ottoman Muslims and Jews perished as Armenian revolutionary groups aimed to create an ethnically, religiously and politically homogenous Armenian state in eastern Anatolia.  The Turkish American community firmly holds that Turkey, thinking of the safety and dignity of its citizens and the people of the region first, should share the benefits of its free borders only with an Armenia which is open to complete dialogue with Turkey, and which is peaceful toward and respectful of its neighbors.

Secondly, an ATAA-FTAA Action Alert, with the support of the Turkish Coalition of America (TCA), corrected NBC's erroneous reference to Turkey as "Kurdistan."  The Action Alert resulted in over 500 letters to NBC in the first six hours.

As we look forward to 2010, the ATAA is well-positioned to work on key initiatives:

ATAA's Media Watch effort, lead by President-Elect Ergun Kirlikovali, continues to expand, as we now have more than 150 writers who monitor and respond to the main media on a daily basis.

ATAA's Census 2010 "SayTurk" outreach campaign continued with a seminar in January for local Turkish American associations in the Washington DC area, while seminars are to follow in other major American metropolises in February.  ATAA applications on behalf of its component organizations are receiving approval, and we are proud to announce that the ATADC received the first grant of $3000 to support Census education activities in the Capitol Region.  Furthermore, ATAA will be applying for the assignment of Census officials at Turkish American community centers and mosques nationwide to assist constituents in the Census 2010 process.  Finally, a 1-800 number has been initiated to hire Turkish Americans to help in Census 2010.  ATAA encourages all people of Turkish heritage, including Turkish Americans, Azeri Americans, Crimean Turks, Turkish citizens of diverse backgrounds and Turks from around the world to write in "Turk" in Question 9 of the Census 2010 Questionnaire that you will receive in March.

Our Turkish American Broad Advocacy Network (TABAN), lead by Past President Nurten Ural, entered the fast lane, as our Vice Presidents will be hosting Grassroots Civic Engagement seminars, Student Orientation Days, and Census 2010 SayTurk Events in major American cities nationwide.  For a complete listing of upcoming events, please refer to Newsletter and ATAA Calendar of Events at www.ataa.org.  We look forward to a productive and successful year, and encourage you to support ATAA through your generous contributions and volunteerism.

On behalf of the ATAA Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, and Staff, I wish you and your family good health, happiness and prosperity in 2010.

Sincerely,

Gunay Evinch
President
Assembly of Turkish American Associations
