Background

On October 6, 2024, The Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) and Empowering the Turkish American Community (ETAC USA) , formally both associated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications (DGC), will hold a virtual event titled “ Footprints of Turkish Cuisine – A Journey from Traditional to Sustainable Future”  in support of  World Food Day [FAO] (A/RES/35/70). Food is the third most basic human need after air and water – everyone should have the right to adequate food. The world’s farmers produce enough food to feed more than the global population yet, hunger persists. Up to 783 million people face hunger due to conflict, repeated weather shocks and economic downturns.  More than 3.1 billion people in the world – 42 percent – are unable to afford a healthy dietCommercial Agrifood systems, as a whole, are vulnerable to disasters and crises, particularly the impacts of climate change but at the same time, they are generating pollution, degrading soil, water and air, and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, and biodiversity loss.

Program Introduction

World Food Day (Oct.16) – As Turkish we are very fortunate to be situated fertile land, long coastlines and diverse, nutritious and delicious foods available in the country.  Different regions of the country is suitable for diverse agriculture options and plants to grow and livestock to be raised.

In this program we will cover:

  1. Use of indigenous grains and seeds vs. GMO seeds
  2. Regenerative farming vs. Conventional farming, their impact on environmental health, human health and well being
  3. Healthy choices in foods without sacrificing taste and enjoyment
  4. Beekeeping and importance to food chain
  5. Turkish Gastronomy

Turkish Gastronomy, Diverse, Delicious and Healthy

Turkish cuisine is very traditional, healthy, delicious and creates zero waste. The original recipes are passed from generation to generation within the families. Traditional cooking methods ensure flavor is sustained through the generations.

Turkish gastronomy pays a great deal of attention to sustainability and zero waste. It is centered around zero-waste cooking. Nothing goes to waste in a typical Turkish cooking. Vegetable scraps are turned into a broth, orange peels are added into cake mixtures, or cooked into preserves and leftover rice or noodles are added to the soups. Pantries are stocked with dried summer fruits and vegetables for winter. Sustainable cooking and food preparation techniques make Turkish cuisine stand out from the rest and flavor is amazing!

Turkish food is healthy. Made with locally grown produce, cooked with plenty of olive oil.  Healthy cooking methods like steaming, poaching, boiling, or baking are widely used to retain all the vitamins and minerals, as well as for the utmost taste and texture.

Turkish cuisine is a rich and diverse blend of flavors and ingredients, influenced by the country’s location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.
